Orchardleigh´s indefinable English charm is testimony to the Estate changing family ownership only twice in the last 800 years. Veiled in a tranquil bowl of parkland and lakes, it’s horizon a sweeping backdrop of rolling Somerset hills, the Poet Laureate Sir Henry Newbolt (1862 – 1938), was inspired to write his finest works from his love of Orchardleigh and it’s Island Church.

Orchardleigh church poem by Sir Henry Newbolt

St Mary´s Island Church

The Orchardleigh C of E Island Church is available for Religious Ceremonies and has an advised capacity for 100 guests.

St. Mary´s, Orchardleigh enjoys the unique setting of being at the edge of a lake with a moat around the Church. Hence it is often referred to as ´The Island Church.´ Its remoteness means there is no electricity supply to the church which means all our services are candlelit and the organ has to be pumped by hand!

The picturesque setting, the lack of electricity and the traditional services mean that many of those who visit the Church enjoy an unforgettable experience. Many of the regular congregation travel miles in order to be here, and would miss the character (and characters) of this unique church.

There is a strong link between Orchardleigh Church and Orchardleigh House for wedding receptions.

Orchardleigh House is licensed for Civil Ceremonies with a capacity of 144 guests.

Banqueting facilities are available for up to 400 guests.

Catering is provided by our own in-house executive Chef. The executive chef and team will carefully design a menu to suit your individual tastes and requirements.

Our Head Chef
At Orchardleigh we take great pride in our food and endeavour to provide our own produce wherever possible.

Beef comes from our herd of Aberdeen Angus and is hung for 28 days before being served as we believe this is the only way to enjoy top quality Aberdeen Angus Beef. Pork is from our herd of Saddleback Sows and Pietriene Boar, this cross gives a beautiful flavour and is much leaner, the bacon, sausages and ham are all absolutely delicious. Our lamb is from our flock of Shetland cross sheep. It is said that the further north the breed the better the flavour, and it is!!

Eggs and Vegetables
Eggs are from Black Rock Chickens beautiful tasting eggs with large, deep yellow yolks. We will soon be growing almost all the English vegetables. These include potatoes, parsnips, cabbages, cauliflower, runner beans, onions, carrots. Homegrown vegetables taste completely different from those sold in the supermarkets!

Our bread comes from a local bakery and is baked and delivered fresh every morning.

Cheese and Preserves
Our cheese comes from a local merchant and is not served until it is mature, so important for cheeses like Stilton and Brie. Our preserves, jams, marmalades and chutneys are all home produced.

We have our own apple orchard which produces beautiful eating and cooking apples. Soon we will be producing raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries and blackberries.

Our fish comes mainly from Brixham and is fresh, our kippers are oak smoked for 7 days and come from the Isle of Man-taste the difference!! If you would like Kippers for breakfast these will need to be pre-ordered no additional cost.

Dairy Products
We are currently setting up our dairy and will be producing our own milk, butter and cheese from Jersey Cows, hopefully by Autumn 2015.

Golf on the Estate

Orchardleigh Golf Club was designed by Brian Hugget and built during 1994, with much of the construction work undertaken by the existing green keeping team.

The course is set in established parkland, which gives a feeling of maturity beyond its years. The 6800 yard par 72 course has been built to a high specification with exceptional quality greens.

The practice facilities are excellent with full length practice range, practice bunker, chipping and putting greens.

Orchardleigh´s parkland course offers 18 spectacular holes routed through mature trees with water coming into play on seven. It certainly is a challenging but rewarding golfing experience, yet amidst the stunning Somerset countryside it’s a haven of peace and tranquillity.
